International Baccalaureate Programmes

This programme is widely offered around the world at many international schools.

The IBO offers three programmes of international education that span the primary, middle and secondary school years. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3-12 years, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students 11-16 years, and the Diploma Programme (DP) for students 16-19 years. While these programes form a continuous sequence, each may be offered independently.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Provides an opportunity for learners to construct meaning, principally through concept-driven enquiry.

Traditional academic subjects are part of the PYP but it emphasizes the interrelatedness of knowledge and skills through a transdisciplinary programme of enquiry.

The PYP focuses on the heart as well as the mind and addresses social, physical, emotional and cultural needs as well as academic ones.

The PYP aims to develop in students:
▪ Sensitivity to the experiences of others through the curriculum
▪ The characteristics listed in the student profile
▪ The attitudes that are an explicit element of the programme
▪ The expectation of socially responsible action as a result of the learning
  experience

The Middle Years Programme (MYP)

A framework of academic challenge and life skills appropriate to this stage of adolescence.

The MYP insists on a thorough study of various disciplines. The accent is on their interrelatedness. Teachers use criteria established by the IBO to assess all student work. The organization does not set or mark examinations. The IBO validates the school's assessment standards by providing external moderation.

The MYP five year curriculum naturally follows the PYP and serves as an excellent preparation for the DP.

The Diploma Programme

A rigorous pre-university course of studies that leads to examinations, for highly motivated secondary school students.

The Diploma Programme is a comprehensive two-year curriculum, available in English, French and Spanish, that generally allows students to fulfill requirements of various national education systems. IB diploma holders are admitted to universities worldwide, including the most selective.

The grading system is criterion-referenced. This means that each student's performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement. Top grades reflect knowledge and skills relative to set standards applied equally to all schools.
